Limited Edition Union Jack Sheraton Outfitted

Released in 2014 the Limited Edition Union Jack Sheraton Outfitted is an ode to the 50th Anniversary of the British Invasion. Anyone who knows their Rock ‘n’ Roll 101, knows that the Beatles first set foot on American soil in February of 1964. The American teenager’s reaction to British visitors bearing guitars has remained fairly consistent ever since. Although there are the exceptions who just don’t seem to translate, see The JAM.

The 50th anniversary of the mop tops in Manhattan aside, the Limited Edition Union Jack Sheraton Outfitted is actually closest to a customized Sheraton made famous by Noel Gallagher. Continue reading Epiphone’s big up to Britain

The great Canadian Maple

Prestige Guitars Heritage Premier Spalt Maple

You know what Canada has a lot of? Other than snow, hockey players and Celine Dion siblings? Maple trees. And not thanks to the fine folks at Prestige Guitars, the same hardwood that brings you the sweetest of syrups each spring is supplying  sweet sounds with this 2015 Heritage Premier.

The Prestige Heritage Premier Spalt Maple wears its grain loud and proud. The naked finish will not only make school children giggle but it makes for unique one of a kind axes. And yes we are aware of the irony of using the axe alias amongst all this tree talk.

For years, Canada’s Prestige guitars has been making top quality instruments from the finest woods. The Splat Maple is one of five created for the Heritage series in 2015. Continue reading The great Canadian Maple

Gretsch Custom Shop Bayou Round Up Gator Hide Guitar

An alligator hide guitar is a curious beast, but when you’re inspired by the cowhide of a recent Gretsch Custom Round Up, coming up with alligator skin is not that much of a leap. California seals beware, if you come from a state with a strong musical heritage, Gretsch may have their eyes on you.

The Round Up itself has been in the Gretsch stable for years. First produced in 1954 as part of the Duo Jet series, the Round Up was adorned with leather trim and fretboard inlays paying tribute and beckoning Western music. Last year the Gretsch custom shop and Stephan Stern created a version that went all in yeehah covered in cowhide. The leather axe was a comfortable curiosity in the guitar world. At NAMM 15, Gretsch unveiled another Stern creation in the reimagining of the Round Up. It’s a beast born in the swamps of the bayou with a tone perfectly matched for the delta blues. The Gretsch Electric Guitar Book

So you know the story of rock ‘n’ roll, of Elvis, Chuck Berry and the Beatles. You know about the players, but what about the played, Gibson, Fender and Gretsch?

The Gretsch Book is a story of American music and the tools of the trade. Not many people are as qualified to tell this side of the rock ‘n’ roll story  as Tony Beacon. When it comes to guitar journalism, Beacon is Prince prolific. He has written dozens of books on the history of guitar manufacturers including Gibson and Fender. His latest is the updated and revised The Gretsch Electric Guitar Book: 60 years of White Falcons, 6120s, Jets, Gents and more.

Through words and pictures, Beacon tells the story of all the hits, like the Chet Atkins Country Gentleman and the White Falcon. But where the story gets interesting is hearing about the models that didn’t immediately strike a chord with artists. Continue reading The gospel according to Gretsch

Behind of The Who’s cinematic tendencies.

Lambert and Stamp The Who have always pushed the idea of what a rock ‘n’ roll band could be. The theatre of their performances, the cinematic scope of their songwriting, the rock operas, the 3 minutes of a pop song was never enough to contain

Cliché Off The Wall Skate Guitar

You gotta love the inventiveness of some people. What was it that made two Argentinians look at a skateboard and think, ‘That would make a good guitar.’

The Skate Guitar is made of two recycled maple skateboards. While we’ve never played one and can’t attest to the sound, we’ve gotta say they look amazing. The brainchild of Ezequill Galasso and Gianfranco Gilmore, who we can only assume are serious dudes, are the …dudes behind Skate Guitar. Continue reading Old rides make sick sound
