The Damned: Don’t You Wish We Were Dead

With its premiere at SXSW, complete with a gig by the band, The Damned: Don’t You Wish We Were Dead served up a bit of punk history.

Ask people to name two early British Punk bands and you’ll hear The Clash and the Sex Pistols. From here the list will start to vary, you’ll hear The Undertones, The Vibrators, and The Buzzcocks. Another top contender for Punk Rock Family Feud would be The Damned. They were the first UK punkers to release a record. Firsts aside, they never achieved the notoriety of the The Clash and The Pistols probably on account of them leaning into goth. While most of the early punks embraced the bubblegum simplicity of the music, the Damned created darker melodies. Continue reading The other punk band.

A Les Paul with a very old soul

A Les Paul with a very old soul

Gibson Les Paul Warhorse As far as electric guitars go, the Gibson Les Paul is an elder statesman.  But it’s certainly not lute old. So artist James A. Willis’  reimagining of the 20th century six-string  with an 1812 Revolutionary War vibe is pretty interesting. The

The Ramones Converse myth

The Ramones Converse myth

Ramones (Product) Red Converse All Star Hi-Tops

Spring means new kicks. New Converse means I may not play in a garage band, but I want that vibe. This is largely attributed to the Ramones.

Truth be told, there’s probably been more models of Ramones Converse than the band ever wore between them. These (Product) Red editions are sweet (and sadly out of stock everywhere we looked). The hit of red is cool, but they look nothing like the Keds the band worn on the cover of their first album.

That’s right kids, the band attributed with turning Chucks into the rock ‘n’ roll shoe didn’t wear them as much as you’d think. The band wore Keds on the cover of their first album. Joey never wore them at all. He needed more support. Who knew fallen arches was punk?

Others myths you might wanna prepared yourself for are: Alice Cooper never bit a head off a bat. Gene Simmons does not have a cow’s tongue. And none of the Ramones were actually siblings. Continue reading The Ramones Converse myth

Mod: From Bebop to Britpop, Britain’s Biggest Youth Movement

Have you ever wonder why The Who target logo appears on art work, posters and clothing with no mention of the band? Neither of have we, because that would be a silly question. But if you know someone who is curious about the origins of the MODest of icons, Mod: From Bebop to Britpop, Britain’s Biggest Youth Movement has the answers.

For the most part music-influenced fashion is brash, rude and, from time to time, shockingly effeminate. Let’s be honest the hair bands of the 80s weren’t, shopping at Just for Men. But no musician’s wardrobe has been as dashing as the Mods. Like Hip Hop culture is to rap, Mod culture was to Jazz. A look and attitude embraced by the musicians and fans alike. And when rock ‘n’ roll replaced jazz as the it music, Mods may have changed the record, but they didn’t change their closet. Martin D-35 Brazilian 50th Anniversary Limited Edition

Martin is celebrating the b-day of one of its most successful models with the D-35 Brazilian 50th Anniversary Limited Edition.

Over the years the D-35’s warm bass tones has provided accompaniment  for folk singers and rockers alike including Elvis, Johnny Cash and Bruce Springsteen. Remarkable when you know that it was a guitar built out of necessity as much as imagination. 50 years ago Martin needed to do something with the leftover rosewood from the D-28. The leftover pieces had small defects and were starting to take up more space than Paul Simon’s ego. They could have simply thrown them away, like Paul done did with Art, but someone at Martin had a better idea. They decided to create a 3-piece back with what was essentially scraps. The sweet surprise was that by inserting a third piece between 2 twin pieces, it gave the acoustic a sweet one-of-a-kind behind. Continue reading Baby got (3-piece) back.
