Les Paul creating Sound on Sound recordings

Les Paul would have been 100 years old on Tuesday, June 9. Part of the B-day bash is a revamped lespaul.com where you can take a deep dive into the man.

While his solid-body electric overshadows almost everything else, Les Paul’s achievements are long and impressive. He was an inventor whose firsts helped define popular music recording which became to be known as Sound on Sound. You think The Beatles and George Martin were doing some trippy things in the 60s, well Les was overdubbing as early as 1945. Add to this being the first to use tape delay, phasing effects, overdubbing and multi-track recording. Continue reading Lessons in Les Paul

Rock ‘n’ Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip Exhibition

This David Bowie billboard announcing a string of gigs in support of Diamond Dogs is part of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip Exhibit.

A while back we featured photographer Martin Landau’s book Rock ‘n’ Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip. It’s a look at rock’s first foray in to Don Draper’s madison avenue. Now, to help sell more books for Martin, make old guys reminisce about the 70s and impart a short lived r ‘n’ r phenomenon onto any hipsters who happen to wander in, the Rock And Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip Exhibition is live through August 16 at the Skirball Cultural Centre in LA.

The show, a compliment to the Bill Graham and the Rock & Roll Revolution Exhibit, features 20 photographs of hand painted billboards creating an experience that’s more 70s than a double live album.

Let’s take a moment and wonder if a tweet announcing a show will ever be worth money in a few years. Not to be hating on technology, but while the functionality of the gig poster has been diminished recently, the art form can not be

Dee Dee Ramone Precision Bass

We wrote about Dee Dee Ramone and the launch of his signature Precision Bass before this axe was released. Now that it has drop, it deserves more digital ink.

The Ramones were not a band lead by one creative individual or even a creative duo. They where a four member band, who didn’t particularly like each other, that created one of the freshest, rawest and most imitated sounds rock ‘n’ roll has ever known. Now true the original four didn’t stick together for the long run. The drummers came and went at a Spinal Rap rate, but it was the chemistry of the original four that created that sound.

Dee Dee was both singer, songwriter and bass player. But he couldn’t play bass and sing at the same time so he gave vocals up to original drummer Joey. On the bass Dee Dee was insanely courageous. A freight train of rhythm that slowed down for no drummer. Continue reading Punk Rock Pounder

Alabama Shakes Chicago Theatre

The Alabama Shakes recently dropped their second album Sound and Color which debuted at number 1 in the U.S. and Canada. In today’s no one pays market, that means the album sold 111 copies. (The last statement is more sarcasm than substantiated.) But it’s all relative right and #1 is a huge achievement.

Brittany Howard and the boys took the songs out for a spin in March when they launched a mini tour of the US. The third show of the tour brought their Voodoo magic to Chicago commemorated by the featured Alabama Shakes gig poster.

The piece was created for the A Shakes by Catharsis, a three person studio which produces nice eye-candy for a righteous roster of bands including Tame Impala and the Tune Yards. Continue reading Shakes Snake
