Jane likes to be touched.

Jane likes to be touched.

Guitars have always been about touch. While some would add swinging and smashing to the ground, Pete Townsend, touch takes precedence. Switzerland’s Relish Guitars latest offering takes the idea of touch to the next level. The Jane is the first electric guitar that allows you to switch

Sonic Editions, Springsteen on stage, Hammersmith Odeon

You can find this print and many like it on Sonic Editions. Bruce before he was big. Before the sculpted shoulders of Born in the USA. This is 1975 when the very American performer was making his British debut at the Hammersmith Odeon. (A performance you can find on the Born to Run 30th Anniversary Edition.) It must have been something watching the songs of the just released Born to Run take form. Before they were the stuff of obligatory encores. That’s the beauty of photography. This image talks to the Hammersmith moment. It’s also a testament that Bruce wore such a hat. Continue reading Why the image is boss.

Gretsch Brian Setzer Hot Rod 2-Tone One of the greatest ambassadors Gretsch Guitars has ever known was George Harrison. It’s fitting that Brian Setzer, today’s biggest advocate of the New York born hollow body, cites Harrison as the guy he first saw with the instrument

Martin Ed Sheeran X Signature Edition

A while back we featured the LX1E Ed Sheeran Signature Edition produced in conjunction with  Ed’s first release + (plus). The limited edition acoustic is a great guitar and the appeal of the rising star saw it sell out. Martin Guitars obviously realizes the potential and they have followed up with the Ed Sheeran X Signature Edition.

Two signature guitars for an artist so young could be viewed as pop star pandering. (Look it up, it’s a thing.) Sheeran’s star has risen faster than a seventeen year-old’s hard on. Ed plays pop with a capital P. His ability to blend acoustic with hip hop has lead to major crossover appeal.  It has also lead to more than a few kids picking up an acoustic. If a Martin Ed Sheeran guitar will see even more kids strumming, then cool. It is a Martin after all. Continue reading X marks the Martin.

Roadie Automatic Guitar Tuner You know when you’re at a show and your favorite rock god changes his guitar more times than Katy Perry changes her wardrobe. You might think to yourself, ‘Is that really necessary’ and ‘why am I making Katy Perry references? Dam

Epiphone’s Dobro Hound Dog M-14 Metalbody

A steel guitar is kind of like a sexy two seater. Sure you want one, but should you? You can’t use it for everything. You’ve got to polish it ever weekend. People may think you’re compensating for a small penis.

The Dobro Hound Dog M-14 Metalbody adds flames to the temptation fire. It’s part of Epiphone’s new releases due Spring 2015. First off, who doesn’t want a guitar named Hound Dog? This is a shallow reason, but a guitar should be purchased with the heart as much as the head. That said the name isn’t what’s new here. The story of the Hound Dog M-14 is its easy-to-play upgrades like a SimTapered Maghogany neck. Of course the brass bell body offers the resonance you’d expect from a company that’s been crafting metal body guitars since 1928. And because it’s an Epiphone you know the price isn’t going to kill you. You should be able to pick one up for under $600.

Brendon Small Snow Falcon Flying V

A blizzard of a beast, the Brendon Small Snow Falcon Flying V is the perfect axe to discuss in the throes of winter. Gibson’s most recent incarnation of the Fly V may look all pure and angelic, but like Flying V’s before it, the Snow Falcon can step up to all the dark chords you can through at it. Namesake Brendon Small has an honorary doctrine in thrashing to the dark lord. As co-creator of Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse, Small is big in the world of metal (sorry for that). Any six-string with his name on it would truly have to pass the test of all the members of Dethklok—except maybe the drummer. Not that drummers don’t rule.

Namesakes aside, the albino V will turn heads of musicians from any genre. It’s just so fu*kin’ white. From its wingtips to its fingerboard, it’s like a freshly born guitar that’s never been fretted. Street price will run you $1500.

AC/DC/SG

AC/DC/SG

The Gibson USA Angus Young SG

AC/DC opened last night’s Grammys with a kick ass performance. Angus Young and lead singer Brian Johnson struck classic pose after classic AC/DC pose. Johnson in cap. Angus in schoolboy shorts, (Pharrell also wore shorts which was so embracing). And then there was the Angus Young guitar, his Gibson Angus Young SG.

The SG is a metal guitar. And no one has realized the crunchy potential of its dual Humbukers as well as Angus. He has been creating some of rocks phattest riffs pretty much exclusively on his ’68 Gibson SG. Ionic? Angus’ SG riffs are what you want in a game of Name that Tune.

The Gibson USA Angus Young SG embraces the specs and qualities of his 1968, which was a standout for the model. As with any good signature axe, it has some sweet adds like the thunderbolts inlays on the rosewood fingerboard. But be warned, the thunder isn’t cheap. The street price is $2309.
