Martin Ed Sheeran X Signature Edition A while back we featured the LX1E Ed Sheeran Signature Edition produced in conjunction with  Ed’s first release + (plus). The limited edition acoustic is a great guitar and the appeal of the rising star saw it sell out. Martin

Gibson Les Paul Tribute 1952

The Gibson Black Beauty auction on February 19 is ramping up to be quite the guitar sale. The Holy Grail of Les Paul’s is hitting the auctioned block at Guernsey’s Auctioneers with a lot of hype backed by a chorus of controversy. The latter brings us to the Gibson Les Paul Tribute 1952.

Part of the kerfuffle surrounding the Black Beauty is the claim by Guernsey’s that it is the Les Paul on which all others evolved. Well the Les Paul Gold Top was produced in 1952 before the Custom aka Black Beauty. Our eyeballs tell us that it looks more like a Les Paul than the Custom. As for whether Les Paul himself preferred the Black Beauty, which is another point of contention whether you’re talking to current owner Tom Doyle or Les Paul relations. Well we ain’t into any of that she said he said bullsh*t, but it’s something to think about if you’re planning on dropping a mortgage at Guernsey’s on the 19th. Continue reading The original beauty

The Vibrators Automatic Lover 45

Knox Carnochan is best known as the punk guitarist whose band’s name has been making 13 year-old boys laugh since 1977. Well snicker no more juveniles, the Vibrators Knox has opened a charity shop specializing in rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia. Located in London’s Camden Town, the shop will offer collectible instruments, tour Ts, gig posters and records. Not unlike like this Vibrators Automatic Lover 45 signed by Knox himself. Profits raised will help out Camden charities.

Camden is a borough of London that has hosted the rise of many British bands including Knox’s Vibrators. The guitarist plans on reaching out to his friends in the British music scene to donate goods they have amassed over years on the road to raise funds for charitable causes. He’ll also look to his Camden Town neighbours the Dublin Castle Music Venue for bands donate swag.

Knox’s band The Vibrators crashed onto the world’s eardrums in 1976. Soon after they were signed to Epic records and spit out their first album Pure Mania. If you don’t know the record hunt it down. It’s a glorious listen in punk rock 101. The band’s second album was less epic, the high point being the single Automatic Lover.

We found this signed version on eBay and propose you buy it and donate it Knox.

Rick Rubin drops knowledge on Genius

Rick Rubin drops knowledge on Genius

Rick Rubin is lifting the curtain on some of rap’s biggest hits on Genius.com. If you know RapGenius.com you know Genius.com. The former was a web site that annotated rap lyrics and became popular enough to draw serious investors and the attention of copyright lawyers. The popularity came in part as artists such as Nas not only endorsed, but contributed to the site annotating and offering commentary on their own lyrics.

In July of this year RapGenius.com became Genius.com a rebranding that saw the site reposition itself beyond rap. Genius.com houses annotations of all genres of music, along with novels, movie scripts, speeches by Abraham Lincoln and a Tylenol bottle.

While the Tylenol bottle is riveting stuff, the contributions from Rick Rubin on Genius are like micro making ofs. It’s like having a drink with the guy who was there when the beat first dropped. Rick Rubin was an architect of hip hop who went on to become a zen master of pop. He’s produced everyone from Jay Z to Black Sabbath to Lana Del Rey to Johnny Cash. The list is as long as it is varied and speaks to Rubin’s genius and knowledge. Not to mention, he created the prototype for the hipster beard. (This last bit of information is unverified.)

Special Edition David Lozeau Art Stratocaster

One of Fender’s most eye-catching new editions is the Special Edition David Lozeau Art Stratocaster 2015.  A celebrated SoCal artist David Lozeau has created a unique world of Day of the Dead characters passed through a lens of Lowbrow absurdity. Not to be confused with a bad B-movie, Day of the Dead is a century’s old Mexican holiday, which sees family and friends gathering to pay homage to the departed. Originally held at the beginning of summer, it was moved to coincide with the Roman Catholic ghoul-fest of All Hallows’ Eve.

The Special Edition David Lozeau Art Stratocaster 2015 series includes four creations pimping Standard Strats. Featured is the Tree of Life, which we’d take to the grave with us.

The Who’s sleeper hit

The Who’s sleeper hit

Art Kane’s The Who

Throughout his career Art Kane created some of the most epic imagery in rock ‘n’ roll. His subjects include Dylan, the Stones, and the Doors. But Kane was more than a rock ‘n’ roll photographer. And Art Kane is more than a collection of rock ‘n’ roll photography. He captured images of celebrity, fashion, nudes and war through his unique lens. He was political and irreverent. He was rock ‘n’ roll.

When you think of The Who images of guitars breaking come to mind, microphones flying high, Townshend’s arm swinging through the air. The fact that they were such an animated force makes this photo all that more amazing. Continue reading The Who’s sleeper hit
