TRIPPIN’ EXHIBITION
When Art Rocked: San Francisco Music Posters
From 1966 to 1971, San Francisco was an amazing scene. When Art Rocked is an exhibition, currently running at the San Francisco Airport, celebrating the psychedelic concert posters that were part of the awesomeness.
When we talk about The Summer of Love, San Francisco was heartbeat central, at least in the US. Live music was a huge part of it, thanks to promoters Bill Graham and Chet Helms.
Aritst inspired by Art Nouveau, Pop Art and advertising, not to mention a whole lot of weed and dollop of acid, created trippy piece after trippy piece. Ignoring art school 101, artists like Victor Moscoso created images that vibrated before a viewer’s eyes. It was a time of psychedelia and everyone got dipped in the acid including Frank Zappa and the Mother’s of Invention and Big Brother and the Holding Company, whose poster is feature. I know you’re saying, I can’t believe he didn’t mention The Dead, but like relax man, their work is featured.
All in all, it’s a groovy collection.
When Art Pocked was curated by Ben Marks, vice-president of The Rock Poster Society and senior editor of ColloectorsWeekly.com The Exhibit run is on now until March 2015.
Really hopping the pilots don’t stare too long at this stuff before wheels are up. Just saying.
