Punk’s birthday shoes.

Punk’s birthday shoes.

With the arrival of 2016, punk rock turns 40. So expect to see plenty of unruly reissues and collabs spit onto your feed. Proof positive, Converse, long known for having ties to the world of punk, has just announced its first collaboration of the year with the Chuck Taylor All Star Sex Pistols Collection. All in all Sex Pistols Chucks are a nice way to start a year of  punksploitation.

Maybe it’s because the canvas uppers was easy to put a bobby pin through and more likely because the price of Chucks made them accessible to a disgruntled teenager on a budget, but Converse have always been at home in Punk’s closet. The Ramones are probably the band most widely attributed with wearing All Stars, although it’s a bit of a myth. Take a closer look and you’ll see the fake bros were wearing Keds on the cover of their debut release and not Converse as many think.

When it comes to any discussion on the history of Punk rock there is no omitting the Sex Pistols. They exploded onto the music scene and then promptly imploded roughly 2 and a half years later. While they only had one proper studio album, that album is a symphony rock and roll angst. DISCLAIMER: For the sticklers out there, true Never Mind the Bollocks wasn’t release until 1977 and the Pistols form in 1975, BUT the name of the genre is attributed to 1976. AND the first Pistols gig was February 12, at the Marquee.

So props to the peeps at Converse for going with the Pistols on Punk’s 40th. The collection includes 6 Sex Pistols Chucks, three shirts and a jacket. (A Converse jacket?) Anyways, each item celebrates the band featuring their artwork and imagery.
